"Louse" meets her Roommate
The stench of rotton food & garbage was overwhelming. All of the trash cans were overflowing with old food containers (leftovers included). This dorm is not air conditioned so the heat had obviously intensified the stench. (I'm no chemist but old food particles + humidity = do not mix well)
After emptying the garbages & opening the windows, I could finally unplug my nose to further soak in my surroundings. My initial investigations deduced that my new roommate was of Asian origin by the chinese handwritten notes sprawled across the floor. The Hello Kitty earmuffs & stuffed animals were also a bit of a tip-off (no stereotypes intended). She clearly was quite a "slob" (to put it bluntly) by the boxes, clothes, shoes, papers, bedding etc. thrown all over the place. The braces elastics, textbooks & closet filled with winter gear indicated that she had lived here for awhile as an NYU student.
I stayed with my Mom at her hotel for the next 2 nights while she was still in town. On Monday I was finally forced to leave the hotel luxury for my new summer digs. After work I grabbed some dinner, visited my friend "Gym" (one of my Dad's "jokes") but by 11pm there was still no sign of my roommate. Finally 11:30pm rolled around & I heard the turn of the key in the lock. In walks my roommate...followed by...her boyfriend! I stood to introduce myself & extended my hand. She stared at me in surprise & didn't accept my outstretched gesture in return (in the words of Stephanie Tanner..."how RUDE!")
She told me her name (which I couldn't really understand as it was heavily accented). She tried to pronounce mine but her broken english translates to "Louse" (yes, the singular form of "lice"..the tiny insects that infest the scalp) How lovely.
I tried to find out more about her but every time I asked a question she replied with "No."
Me: "So are you taking summer courses here?"
Me: "Oh, so you must be working here then?"
Me: "Oh...well what are you doing here?" (thinking I'd get her with a question requiring more than yes/no)
I did manage to eventually find out that she is indeed from China, she's getting her braces off "soon" and her boyfriend is leaving Friday (I hope). Not a WHOLE lot to work with.
They proceeded to take a shower (its now past midnight) and speak loudly in Chinese. I couldn't tell if they were yelling or flirting. They were probably talking about me but I can't be too sure.
Luckily, there is a 2nd bedroom in the suite (if you can call it that) that I've been able to sleep in & avoid them altogether while getting ready for work in the morning.
Unfortunately, we got a notice on our door informing us that TWO new roommates will be moving in this Sunday. So I have 2 more nights of solitude before moving back to the same bedroom as her.
The silver lining is that its only temporary & luckily it's New York...aka. I'm not home much.
