Last week, my friends Jeff, Jenny & I (sounds like a sitcom), headed over to the cobblestoned streets of the Meatpacking District for an after-work drink. (who am I kidding, toss an "s" on that word)
We were uninformed of the "male dresscode," and although Jeff looked quite stylish in his John Varvatos shorts, we were denied from Gansevoort & Buddha Bar until his shorts grew a few inches into pants. In our dresses, Jenny and I were showing more leg than him (scandalous!) yet were still warmly welcomed. (How sexist) ;)
We went to the Brass Monkey instead but weren't very impressed with the ambiance. We left shortly after checking out the view of Pier 54 on the Hudson river.
After contemplating the patio at Ono, we settled on the Standard Hotels Beer Garden (or BIERGARTEN as we later discovered). It's a hidden little gem that we were taken to through the hotel (it's beside the Standards other indoor-outdoor patio lounge, "The Living Room")
We started off first with cocktails (a rookie mistake) and then spotted the ticket booth for the "Bier Bar." $8/ticket for any one of the oversized German beers on tap. I chose the blonde wheat one (how fitting). It was ice cold & there was no wait at the bar, despite being fairly crowded. You can sit, or stand & mingle. There is also ping-pong going on in the back corner for the table-tennis inclined. It almost feels as though you are sitting in a European garden with twinkle lights & a trendy after-work clientele.
I would definitely go back again! Next time, I'm trying their infamous Brez'n (aka. pretzel).
PROST! (as they say)
